It’s Giving Tuesday!
Giving Tuesday is a day where everyone, everywhere can do something to support the good causes that mean so much to them.
You can volunteer your time, donate money, share your skills, and many other things!
It is a day to give back by supporting a cause close to your heart or doing something good for your local community or someone in need.
If you would like to support Unity is Strength for Giving Tuesday, please visit our website where you can donate or get in touch with us to find out how you can offer your time to support our work. Thank you!
Schools in Uganda are set to reopen in January!
At long last, both primary and secondary schools are due to reopen in January 2022. We have not heard of any changes to this plan since the news on the Omicron variant, but we will keep checking in with Dominic to see how things are. We will let you know as soon as there are students back at KAASO again.
Check out our Impact Stories
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Sarah Begg for writing the Impact Stories that feature on our website. Sarah joined Unity is Strength as a volunteer in September 2021. In October, Sarah led a call with Dominic to evaluate the impact the income-generating projects are having.
We’re delighted with how the stories have come together and think they give an excellent insight into how your donations are helping the community.
Thank you to The Grail Society!
We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a grant of £1,000 from The Grail Society to support the Piggery Project at KAASO.
To kickstart this project, a piece of land was allocated to a group of teachers. They built a pigsty and were able to purchase two pigs. The teachers cared for the animals; learning animal husbandry skills and diversifying their own employment skills. Caring for the animals gave the teachers purpose and an activity to focus on, plus an opportunity to advance their own knowledge in a new discipline.
Since the piggery was built, the two pigs have given birth to four piglets which will be sold on the local market or further afield in Kampala. The ambition is to create a project which is self-sufficient and catalyses a multiplier effect that would enhance local market activity, enhance local incomes and contribute to food security.
This small but sustainable initiative has established a new and lasting income-generating activity for the school community at KAASO. A diversified income source gives financial insurance and stability to teachers in times when education, sadly, has had to be paused. The benefits experienced have prompted teachers to plan for the project’s expansion, so parents are next!
The success of the project has attracted national attention and has consequently been visited and endorsed by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Education. It has been heralded as a national example of self-sufficiency and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We were delighted to be invited to the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Wednesday 17th November to talk about Unity is Strength. There were about 30 businesses there from different walks of life, so it was fantastic to have the opportunity to share KAASO’s story with a new audience!
Following this on Monday 22nd November, Lizzie Hulton-Harrop visited Northbourne Park School near Deal, Kent to give an assembly on Unity is Strength. When Lizzie worked at Northbourne from 2013-14, a Partnership was set up between KAASO and Northbourne. To see the ethos behind the Partnership and some of the activities the schools did together, please see the Partnership website.
We are very grateful to Northbourne Park for their continued support of the Partnership and of KAASO through various fundraising events.
