Land preparations begin

Earlier this year, we were able to help KAASO buy a 9-acre piece of land that will be used for income-generating projects to support the school. In the long term, the land will be used to grow coffee as this will provide the school with the best return. Coffee can be intercropped with bananas, cassava, beans, and maize.

Dominic and the team at KAASO are now ready to start preparing the land to plant the crops, the first being matoke bananas. This will involve clearing shrubs off the land, digging holes for planting the banana suckers, adding manure to the land for fertilizer, weeding, digging trenches for water and manure retention on the land, and purchasing and planting the bananas.

Following this, they will be ready to plant the coffee seedlings in January just before the rainy season starts in February.

We are absolutely over the moon to have received a grant of £5,000 from The Grail Society to help KAASO deliver this work.

Your chance to BUY coffee seedlings for KAASO

To spread the word about the amazing work KAASO is doing, we have created a little something for people to pop in Christmas cards they send out this year as a virtual gift for KAASO.

KAASO has budgeted for a total of 4,950 coffee seedlings for this plot of land. Each seedling costs approximately 54p. With huge thanks to you and The Grail Society, we have raised enough so far for 2,619 seedlings.

To raise funds for the remaining seedlings, we have created ‘vouchers’ that can be purchased for amounts between £5 – £25.

Once purchased, we will send you physical vouchers to give to people over Christmas. Below is an example of the £5 voucher that buys 10 coffee seedlings.

Vouchers are available for the following amounts:

• £5 for 10 coffee seedlings
• £10 for 20 coffee seedlings
• £20 for 40 coffee seedlings
• £25 for 50 coffee seedlings

One of the best things about the money for the coffee seedlings is that they are being bought from the KAASO Nursery Bed team, one of the income-generating projects run by the teachers. So the funds will help KAASO twice!
